Should You Buy a Standby Generator?
Been Maritimers we all know the feeling of losing power during many of our typical windy storms. It is not an uncommon occurrence and it certainly drives home the importance we put on our electrical service. As always it ends up been an after thought when it comes to having a backup power solution installed.
What are Standby Generators? Unlike portable generators, standby generators are connected directly to your home's electrical panel and powered by an external fuel supply. Smaller units are slightly larger than portable generators and can energize just a few circuits at a time. Larger, whole-house systems will do just as their name suggests, they'll comfortably power an entire home.
How do Standby Generators Work? When the system detects an interruption in your electrical service an automatic transfer switch will disconnect you from the utility. Once your home is safely off the grid the switch starts up the generator then transfers its power to your homes electrical panel. When your municipal power is resumed, the switch will shut down the generator and reconnect your homes electrical panel back to the utility. This makes for a seamless operation, ideal for families with small children or those relying on electric powered medical equipment.
Installing a standby generator is by no means a Do-It-Yourself project. You will require the expertise of an experienced Electrician who has the know how and skills to do the job right.
